Every year during the pre-Christmas season, Duisburg’s city center transforms into a magical, glittering sea of lights with well over a hundred lovingly decorated wooden huts, festively adorned fir trees, and various light installations. The enchanting atmosphere of the Christmas market marks the beginning of the most wonderful time of the year for many.

Christmas Markets in Cologne on the Rhine 2024

Four major Christmas markets in the heart of Cologne and a Cologne Harbor Christmas Market at the Chocolate Museum create a unique pre-Christmas atmosphere that is distinctively Cologne.

The Christmas markets at the Cathedral, on Altermarkt with Heumarkt, Neumarkt, and Rudolfplatz all have nearly the same start and end dates and similar opening hours. Visitors can get a taste of all the markets during a stay in Cologne in the pre-Christmas season.

Located directly at Cologne Cathedral, near the train station, picturesque in the shadow of the towering cathedral spires and the Roman-Germanic Museum, 150 semi-circular pavilions with over 70 demonstrating artisans invite you to a festive stroll during Advent. The Christmas market on the Cathedral Square is undoubtedly the most impressive among the Cologne Christmas markets.

There are no alleys here; instead, the path winds around the uniformly looking stalls that spiral like a snail on the square. The endpoint is a special attraction, the approximately 25-meter-high Christmas tree, the largest in the Rhineland.

The rich range of products offered by the exhibitors includes jewelry, Christmas tree decorations, nativity scenes, Christmas gifts and other presents, wooden toys, leather goods, textiles, glassware, ceramics, and much more. It is not only about selling but also showing how items are made. Popular souvenirs are the Christmas mugs with the annual motif of Cologne Cathedral. You can warm up in a cozy atmosphere with original Christkindl mulled wine.

Additionally, culinary delights include spit-roast sandwiches, Bergische waffles with hot cherries, and specialties from Mexico and Africa. A particular hit is the potato pancakes with apple sauce.

Since you are already at the Cathedral, a short detour to the nativity scene there is also worthwhile.
